Iceland (Arnarstapi , cruising off Latrabjarg, Akureyri, Grimsey )

Iceland: endless beauty

Sparse and lush, grey and green, bubbling and icy – the many sides of Iceland’s will enchant you from the outset. An initial impression of this world of contrasts will be provided by the Snaefellsnes Peninsula – Iceland in miniature. With an unrestrained power, the sea has forged bizarre pillars, archways and caves on the basalt coast. After your first landing, the panoramic view in the small fishing village of Arnarstapi is shaped by Stapafell mountain. Marvel at the region’s volcanic system on a jeep tour to Snaefellsjoekull volcano*, which – covered in ice and snow and rising almost 1,500 m high – dominates the national park. Jules Verne described its crater as the starting point of A Journey to the Center of the Earth. The lava field of Klifhraun on your walk to the cliffs of Soelvahamar* will seem like a geological history book written in stone. The stories passed down through the generations are an important part of Iceland’s history: on the trail of the sagas*, mystical lava formations and Helgafell, the “holy mountain of the Vikings”, illustrate the stories of the past. Our experts will provide information that cannot be found in any book. For example, when the BREMEN cruises off the bird-inhabited cliffs of Latrabjarg – the nesting place of thousands of puffins, guillemots and auks. At the time of your cruise, there will also be plenty of chances to observe the giants of the seas, as humpback, fin and minke whales return to the north after the winter. Akureyri, a northern gem, is home to the writer Jon Sveinsson and famous for its diverse botanical gardens. Words cannot express the wonderful landscape that awaits you when you travel to the Godafoss waterfall and Midge Lake*. The heathens are said to have consigned their pagan idols to the thundering Godafoss during the process of Christianisation. And the name of Lake Myvatn (or “Midge Lake”) refers to the swarms of midges that often hover over the mystical waters like pulsating clouds of fog. Experiencing the volcanic landscape of Askja from the air* promises a very special experience, covering the “desert of crimes”, caldera and turquoise crater lake. You can also experience one of the greatest joys on earth by riding Icelandic horses*. Your knowledge will keep pace with these many impressions as the experts provide fascinating insights into topics such as geology, the animal kingdom and the Viking history of Grimsey. Large colonies of birds nest on the remote volcanic island in the steep cliffs that plunge into the sea.

Spitsbergen (including Prins Karls Forland, Ny-Alesund, Moellerhafen (Cross Bay), Raudfjord, Magdalenefjord, Isfjord)

Spitsbergen: polar bears ahead!

Massive glaciers, deep fjords and untouched wilderness: your eventful days on the coasts of Spitsbergen will be characterised by adventure. When the Dutch seafarer Willem Barents set out in 1596 to find a northeast passage to Asia, he discovered the archipelago and named it after the peaked mountains. Explore the habitat of whales, Arctic foxes, polar bears and walruses in great detail thanks to the captain and crew’s years of Arctic experience. Again and again, they will react flexibly and spontaneously to guarantee you unforgettable moments. For example, if you are lucky enough to hear a cry of “Polar bear spotted!” Depending on the weather and ice, you can explore the Arctic scenery in a particularly exciting manner and observe the wildlife from close proximity – for example, on the small island of Prins Karls Forland, where walruses often gather in herds. The area around Ny-Alesund provides a spectacular backdrop for watching sea birds: it was here that Amundsen and Nobile set out in 1926 in the airship Norge and were the first people to reach the North Pole. Today, the location is home to a few researchers focusing on climate change. Glaciers and ice, awe and fascination: Moellerhafen (Cross Bay) will not be the only place where the landscape takes your breath away. Unforgettable scenes also abound in the Raudfjord with its red-tinged mountain slopes. In the Magdalenefjord, you will gain insights into the former whaling tradition and gaze in astonishment at the majestic glacial backdrop. Expansive tundra and peaked mountains shape the Isfjord and its neighbouring fjords – one of Spitsbergen’s largest fjord systems at over 100 km long. Overwhelming dimensions that the BREMEN will explore depending on the conditions. Look forward to the diversity of an unforgettable expedition to an amazing world.
