Chile’s southern fjords (sailing through the Beagle Channel, passing the Garibaldi Glacier, sailing through the Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, intensive cruising in the Chilean fjords, passing the Pio XI Glacier)
Natural wonders at the ends of the earth
Thundering waterfalls flow into tranquil mountain lakes, mighty glaciers rise up into the blue sky and the Andean condor flies majestically over its kingdom: the Chilean Fjords are one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world. It is as though the small, manoeuvrable BREMEN was made for navigating through the labyrinth of channels and islands. Depending on local conditions, you can enjoy a number of Zodiac trips, allowing you to experience the beauty of Chile up-close. As soon as you enter the Beagle Channel, you will enjoy fantastic views of the blue, shimmering tongue of ice that is the Garibaldi Glacier. Seabirds and seals dart to and fro near the mighty glacier’s edge. Follow the route taken by the first person to circumnavigate the globe through the famous Strait of Magellan to Punta Arenas. From there, a hike through Magellanes National Reserve* will take you into a world of diverse flora. The fauna, on the other hand, is the focus of a trip to the penguins on the Isla Magdalena*. Here you will get a fascinating insight into the habitat of the thousands of Magellanic penguins on the island. Those who like to discover nature in a more active way will be in their element on a kayak tour of the Strait of Magellan*. Afterwards, the BREMEN will demonstrate its advantages as an expedition ship to the full as it passes through the narrow straits of the Smyth, Union and Kirke channels, before you reach a masterpiece of creation from Puerto Natales: the Torres del Paine National Park*. The granite peaks of the famous Torres rise up above glittering waterfalls, extensive forests and shimmering, aquamarine mountain lakes. You might see condors, guanacos and flamingos here. Alternatively, you can venture between the steep mountain sides into the most beautiful valley in the region on a trek in French Valley*. Over the next few days, the BREMEN will take plenty of time to explore the breathtaking panoramas of the Chilean Fjords. Passing through the Valdes, Sarmiento and Inocentes channels, the ship will approach one of the highlights of your impressions of Patagonia: the Pio XI Glacier, one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. Enjoy impressive views of the blue-white foot of the glacier, which is several kilometres wide.
Relaxation at sea/sailing through the northern fjords
Another testament to the power of nature is Chaiten, an evocative premier destination for the BREMEN. The small town at the foot of the volcano of the same name was buried under silt and ash when the volcano erupted in 2008. It is fascinating to see how life is slowing returning to the ghost town. Gain some insights into the geological activity in the area on a trek at the foot of the volcano* or into a diverse ecosystem on a hike through the Valdivian rainforest*.
Majestic nature – proud cities
The island of Chiloe is famous for the living mythology of its indigenous people, the Huilliche. Yet you are sure to find the magic of life even more fascinating when you go penguin watching on the island of Punihuil*. This is the only place in the world where Humboldt and Magellanic penguins breed alongside one another.
Relaxation at sea
Isla Damas , cruising off Isla Chanaral
Experience some real-life chapters in the lives of Humboldt penguins, cormorants and turkey vultures following the Zodiac landings on the small Isla Damas (subject to official approval). Your wildlife sightings will continue as your cruise off Isla Chanaral, where you can keep a lookout for seabirds and seals.
Relaxation at sea
A stroll through the historic centre of Iquique provides a fascinating contrast – or you can explore the historic treasures around Iquique*, with pre-Colombian geoglyphs on the mountainsides of Pintados.
Relaxation at sea
The mysticism of the pre-Columbian geoglyphs will be outclassed when you get to Paracas (Pisco) and take a flight over the mysterious Nazca lines*, which are more than 2,000 years old. There are several theories about the origins of the geometric figures and monumental pictures of animals. Some living impressions from the animal kingdom will complete the picture, as sea lions, gannets and Inca terns provide you with an unforgettable end to your cruise in the wildlife paradise of Islas Ballestas*.
