Where the extraordinary is at home
As soon as you go on board in Iquitos, your adventure sets off on its winding course. The BREMEN can penetrate deep into this explorer’s paradise – it is as though this small expeditionary vessel was made for the task. The Zodiacs in particular are right in their element here. Depending on the weather conditions and currents, these robust inflatable rubber boats will take you along the narrow waterways to discover the overwhelming wonders of nature, and give you a close-up view of life in the world’s greatest rainforest.

Downstream on the Upper Amazon with Zodiac landings (incl. Libertad, Leticia, Rio Jutai, Cuxiu Muni, Rio Negro)

Take, for example, the settlement of Libertad, where you will meet the welcoming Yagua Indians. Formerly nomads who once hunted with poisoned arrows and blowpipes, they now demonstrate their dexterity with works of art, handicrafts and traditional masks. Immerse yourself in the fascinating river life, where children keep iguanas, monkeys and parrots as pets. You will also experience the mouth-watering abundance served up by the lush plant life in Leticia, an important trade centre in the border triangle of Colombia, Peru and Brazil. At the markets on the river bank, you cannot fail to be impressed by the tropical fruits and vegetables with their enticing colours and fragrances. Only the Zodiacs can penetrate even deeper into the jungle along the many side branches and tributaries such as the Rio Jutai, which you can explore in detail. Entering ever deeper into the green heart of South America, you will glide past vine-hung trees and bromeliads with stunning bright-red flowers. Time and again, your eyes will seek the Amazon parrots and blue-and-yellow macaws perched high up in the tops of the trees. In Cuxiu Muni, too, you can experience the fascinating animal world. Here you will see large-billed terns fishing in the water and saffron finches picking seeds out of the floating water grass. Follow that up with a late-evening Zodiac tour and succumb to the magic of a tropical night watching caimans and bats.

Nature’s colour palette
Be witness to a colourful natural spectacle at the Meeting of the Waters, where the black Rio Negro flows alongside the yellow Rio Solimoes for kilometres without mingling. Water level permitting, the BREMEN will linger as you explore the river banks alongside the Rio Negro, making it all the more likely that you will spot the pink river dolphins or manatees. The manoeuvrable Zodiacs will take you to discover this nature conservation area, where you will visit small hidden settlements.

The river of life carries you further downstream towards the capital of the Brazilian federal state of Amazonas: Manaus. The metropolis in the middle of the rainforest is home to magnificent treasures such as the Teatro Amazonas, whose splendid interior with crystal chandeliers and marble portals was transported here from Europe. Its construction was made possible by the proceeds from the rubber boom during the late 19th century. The City History and Opera House* excursion brings to life the history of the former Portuguese fortress and missionary base. The seventh biggest city in Brazil and the Meeting of the Waters can be seen from an especially spectacular perspective on a tour by Water Plane over Manaus*.

Downstream on the Lower Amazon with Zodiac landings (incl. Parintins, Alter do Chao, Guajara)

Paradise stretching as far as the eye can see
Accompanied by the screams of howler monkeys, you reach Parintins, where you experience the contagious rhythm of life and joie de vivre of South America. With their brightly coloured costumes and their intoxicating music, the dancers relate the ancient legend of the resurrection of a bull. However, nature has its moving moments, too: butterflies the size of plates dance through the air and tiny hummingbirds silently flap their wings over the water – all against the background of a many-voiced chorus coming from the jungle. Alter do Chao, the “Caribbean of the Amazon”, greets you with its white beaches. Enjoy a swim in the warm water before diving into the exotic animal kingdom of Guajara, where you will be able to observe many different species of birds and powerful water buffaloes.
