Day trip through the Breves Channels

Already when travelling through the narrow Breves Channels in the Amazon delta, the advantages of the BREMEN being an agile expedition ship are clear to see. On entwined waterways, it travels right by the tropical riverside vegetation with buriti and acai palms and the stilted huts of the Caboclos.

Upstream to the lower Amazon with Zodiac landings (including Guajara, Alter do Chao, Parintins, Canacari)

Every view of the riverbank holds new discoveries such as the various species of heron, buzzards and hawks in Guajara. Another impressive animal is the more than one-tonne-heavy water buffalo, which stands deep in the river and grazes calmly on the aquatic plants. Follow their lead and enjoy hours relaxing in the village of Alter do Chao. Bathing in the warm water of the emerald-green Rio Tapajos near the white sandy beach, you will feel as if you are in the Caribbean.

The pulsing beat of South America
Your stay in Parintins is characterised by dramatic dances and incredible music. The native people’s zest for life comes through in the colourful show “Bumba-meu-boi”. An impressive Zodiac tour takes you to Canacari, where nature is shown in all its glory. The magnificent Victoria amazonica, the largest water lily in the world, will impress you with leaves measuring up to three metres in diameter.

Mon, 30.03.2015

Accompanied by the sounds of the jungle, you will reach Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas. The rubber boom provided the metropolis on the Rio Negro at one time with incredible wealth. A testament to this is the splendid Teatro Amazonas with marble portals from Verona and cut-glass chandeliers from Murano. On the trail of the gems of the region, explore the city history and opera house*, and a natural spectacle takes you to the “meeting of waters” where the “black” Rio Negro and the “yellow” Rio Solimoes flow next to each other for kilometres. You will also enjoy tremendous views over Manaus by sea plane*.

Upstream to the upper Amazon with Zodiac landings (including Badajos, Cuxiu Muni, Jutai River, Leticia, Pevas, Nauta)

The upper reaches of the Amazon: ideal for the BREMEN
After Manaus the Amazon becomes narrower, more intertwined and shallower. Thanks to its low draught, the BREMEN can continue to sail. And thus it heads west for more unforgettable scenery and wildlife observation. For example, at Badajos, where yellow-headed blackbirds and black-capped donacobiuses fly over the sweet grass of the riverbank and hummingbirds bustle about the blooming mistletoes. Sometimes the legendary pink river dolphins will also splash about near the ship. A natural backdrop that only really comes to life after dark. This leads you to embark on an evening Zodiac excursion after visiting the native village in Cuxiu Muni. Accompanied by the many-voiced song of the frogs and cicadas, you can spot caimans and nocturnal animals such as bats. Experience an unforgettable expedition day on the Jutai River, a unique ecosystem and home to toucans, macaws and magnificent orchid species. Try the fruits of the region at the lively markets of the Colombian city of Leticia. Back in the more primitive areas, be enchanted by the inhabitants of the typical village of the native people of Pevas with traditional dances and handicrafts. For an adventurous end to your expedition, the BREMEN heads for Nauta. The small village lies so far upstream that it can only be reached when the tide is high enough. Whether the BREMEN manages to reach it you will only find out on board – and you can then look back on this and many other great expedition moments in Iquitos.
