Sao Miguel/Azores

Fascinating experiences in charming natural surroundings
All nine Azores islands are of volcanic origin – and yet each has its own individual character. So that you can experience it intensively, the Captain and crew will adapt the itinerary flexibly to the local conditions. The first highlight awaits you on Sao Miguel, the largest island. Setting out from Ponta Delgada you will undertake a Jeep Tour to the Crater Lakes of Sete Cidades*. Enjoy the fantastic view into the interior of the volcano, or, on the excursion Furnas Fumaroles*, explore not only bubbling fumaroles but also the only tea plantation in Europe.

Fri, 04.10.2013

Sao Jorge (Cruising off Ilhéu do Topo, Velas )

The most beautiful hiking paths of the Azores can be found on Sao Jorge. With the Zodiacs you will head for the island on which the charming town of Velas will captivate you with its numerous buildings dating from 18th and 19th centuries.

Sat, 05.10.2013

Western Azores (Flores , Corvo )

You will fall victim to the magic of Flores, the westernmost island of the Azores, in Santa Cruz das Flores, the small, picturesque main town. Even more idyllic is Corvo. Only around 400 people live on the smallest Azores island. Hectic and stress are unknown here, as you will also discover when you leave Porto da Casa for the Cara-do-Indio hiking path*. Small paths lined with stone walls along which the locals drive their cattle to their pastures, lead you to the original beauty of this gem.

Central Azores (Pico , Faial, Graciosa, Terceira)

Fascinating perspectives are offered you on the island of Pico: The volcano of the same name, which is more than 2,000 m high, and the peak of which often disappears in the clouds, is the highest mountain in Portugal. Departing from the small town of Madalena, which was already founded in 1542, you will start out on a  Scenic Excursion across the Crater Island Pico* and absorb the wild natural surroundings – bizarre-shaped rock formations, lava fields and a rainforest-type of vegetation. As an alternative, on a hike through the Vineyards of Criacao Velha*, which meanwhile form part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, you can discover how the volcanic soil lends the famous Verdelho grape its unique aroma.

Formed by fire
Just in time to visit Peter’s Café Sport – the legendary meeting place for round-the-world yachtsmen – in the late afternoon you will arrive in Horta on Faial . The next day you will have enough time to explore the island. Look forward to spectacular insights into the impressive volcanic crater in the centre of the island on a Hike around the Caldera of Faial* or a Scenic Excursion on Faial*. A genuine insiders’ tip among explorers is Graciosa, which is visited by only a few ships and will enthral you with its original naturalness. On the excursion Graciosa, the “Delightful Island” – Small Villages and Volcanoes*, walk down into the Furna do Enxofre, an underground sulphur cave and an impressive spectacle of untamed nature which you will also experience on the excursion Caves and Hot Springs*. You will also feel their power on a Hike on Terceira*, which, starting out from Praia da Vitoria, will lead you to the imposing Natal Caves, the lava passages of which consist of basalt stalactites and stalagmites. On the other hand, devote your time to exciting cultural aspects on the Guided Tour of the Island of Terceira and the Town of Angra do Heroísmo*, which, due to its historic town centre with superb renaissance and baroque buildings, is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

Thu, 10.10.2013

Santa Maria

Finally the BREMEN heads for the southernmost island, Santa Maria. From Vila do Porto you will start out on a Guided Tour of the Island*, on which i.a. you will visit the village of Anjos, just like Christopher Columbus long before you. On the superb sandy beach of Praia Formosa you can once again enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the Azores that has made your expedition an experience beyond compare.
